Ia menyeret diri dalam lumpur

Ia pemburu pula

Tibalah saat puteranya akan dikawinkan
Halnya dirundingkan
Si putera: Aku masih terlalu muda.
Si Bapak: Kawinlah sesukami, asal jangan
perempuan buta.
Si Ibu: Kawinlah, Nak, baik ada temanku.

Adik perempuannya
Tak sepatah pun berkata.
Hatinya terbelah antara Ibu penyabar
Dan si Bapak yang kejam
Namun dicintai sepenuhnya hati.

Si putera akhirnya kawin
dengan gadis pilihan ibunya
Si Bapak mendongkol sejak semula
Karena bukan pilihannya

Tahun berganti tahun
Musim berganti musim
Juara Judi semakin tua
Puterinya pun dewasa
namun tak kunjung jodoh
Pula menantu ternyata mandul
Cucu diharap tak juga datang.

“Mana hanya satu anak laki
Menantu pilihan ibunya ternyata ladang mati
Mampus kau semua.”
Demikian kutuk Juara
Di saat pulang dari gelanggang judi.

Puteranya tak peduli
Putuskan pergi merantau
bersama isteri

Berkata pada ibunya;
“Tak akan aku pulang
Jangan aku ditunggu
Atau Bapak mati dulu.”

Tinggallah ibunya sendirian
ditemani adiknya
Tak ada yang meminangnya
Orang takut menghadapi bapaknya

Yang kini jarang kembali
asyik berburu di hutan berhari-hari
Menghindar gelannggang judi
diburu kenangan pada putera satunya
di rantau jauh

Di desa suatu ketika
sSampai kabar
Menantu mandul meninggal di rantau

Si Ibu yang menerima kabar
Menghempas badan ke lantai:
“Demikianlah nasibku
Kelahiranku yang kasip
Ditinggalkan orang hidup
Ditinggalkan orang mati.”

Puterinya yang diam di sampingnya
merasa sebatang kara

Juara lama tak pulang-pulang
Pindah ke desa lain
Kawin lagi
Harapkan anak laki pengganti
Penyambung keturunan
Sebelum ia mati

Juara mendapat tiga anak
Dari isteri barunya
Semua perempuan
Tak ada laki

Suatu hari
ketika sakit berat
Pawang yang diundang
berkata:
“Adakan pesta korban
Undang isteri pertama
begitu pula puterinya
Mintalah pengampunan mereka
demi leluhur.”

Dengan berat hati
Juara kirim pesan
Agar isteri dan puterinya datang
Lalu ia menanti

Pesuruh pun pulang
Bawa berita meragukan:
Hati Juara dirundung bimbang
Isteri dan puteri
Mungkin datang, mungkin tidak
ban biar lupa gundahnya
Juara pergi berburu
di hari anak-isterinya
dikabarkan tiba

Ia berburu di lereng gunung di hutan
di luar desa
Sepanjang hari
sampai sorenya

Menjelang malam
Di kampung ternyata anak-isterinya tiba
Tapi Juara tak tahu
asyik berburu rusa

Malamnyaia digotong
berlumuran darah
Katanya diterkam harimau
“Tak dapat lagi ditolong
Ajal menuntut sudah” – kata orang desa
Lalu ia dibaringkan

di tengah rumahnya dulu
di mana anak isterinya telah menunggu

Yang menyambutnya dengan kagu ratap:
“Kembali sudah, kembali juara
Juaraku pulang dari berburu rusa ....”

Pahlawan kita lalu mati
di pangkuan isteri yang ditinggalkan

Demikianlah desa kami
kehilangan pahlawannya.

SI ANAK HILANG
Pada terik tengah hari
Titik perahu timbul di danau
Ibu cemas ke pantai berlari
Menyambut anak lama ditunggu

Perahu titik menjadi nyata
Pandang berlinang air mata
Anak tiba dari rantau
Sebaik turun dipeluk ibu

Bapak duduk di pusat rumah
Seakan tak acuh menanti
Anak di sisi ibu gundah
- laki-laki layak menahan hati -

Anak disuruh duduk bercerita
Ayam disembelih nasi dimasak
Seluruh desa bertanya-tanya
Sudah beristri sudah beranak?

Si anak hilang kini kembali
Tak seorang dikenalnya lagi
Berapa kali panen sudah
Apa saja telah terjadi?

Seluruh desa bertanya-tanya
Sudah beranak sudah berapa?
Si anak hilang berdiam saja
Ia lebih hendak bertanya

Selesai makan ketika senja
Ibu menghampiri ingin disapa
Anak memandang ibu bertanya
Ingin tahu dingin Eropa

Anak diam mengenang lupa
Dingin Eropa musim kotanya
Ibu diam berhenti berkata
Tiada sesal hanya gembira

Malam tiba ibu tertidur
Bapak lama sudah mendengkur
Di pantai pasir berdesir gelombang
Tahu si anak tiada pulang
